In the province of Ontario, we’ve seen the Ford government make major cuts to OSAP and funding for post-secondary education. Historically, students have been at the forefront of social change: in January 2019, YUGSA and YFS launched the We the Students campaign along with other students’ unions across Ontario. It is time we continue to fight against the massive cuts in education!
As part of the We the Students campaign, we are asking you to join us on November 1 for the Activist Assembly and on November 6 for a one day student strike.
Activist Assembly: How to fight the power and win!
Date: Friday, November 1, 2019
Time: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Location: Convention Centre, Second Student Centre
Along with the YFS, we will be co-hosting our very own Activist Assembly in which students will have the opportunity to receive the education and skills needed to be activists within their own communities. From learning about current issues in Ontario to solidarity across movements, this activist assembly is meant to bring leaders from all walks of life into the Convention Centre in the Second Student Centre so we can learn from each other and learn how to fight for access to a more just and equitable world.
Workshops offered will include:
- Anti-Oppression training
- York 101 and current issues in Ontario
- Educate, Agitate, Organize
- People over pipelines
- Solidarity across Movements

Join us as we demand free education and an immediate stop to Ford’s massive cuts! Over 10,000 York students have signed our petition calling for the reversal of Ford’s major cuts to OSAP and funding for post-secondary education. On November 6, York students will be taking action to call on York University and the Ontario government to reverse these cuts and uphold students’ right to organize.
The YFS and YUGSA have declared this day a Day of Action and has been working to ask other students’ unions across the province to join us! Join us on November 6 as we strive to build a system of post-secondary education that is of high quality and accessible to all.
