We are greatly concerned with the Ontario government’s mandate to require Free Speech policies at every publicly-assisted college and university. The policy will be directly tied to operating grant funding that universities and colleges receive from the provincial government, including how effectively the standards set by the government are upheld.
It is unprecedented for a provincial government to give this mandate. At York, we are particularly worried about a potential threat to our rights, freedoms, and funding under the guise of “free speech”.
York University administration will act quickly on our Free Speech policy because it will be finalized in December 2018. A working group has been created (with no graduate student representation despite our demand that YUGSA be included in the working group) and they have released a document about the initiative.
We encourage everyone in the York community to attend the upcoming consultations and have your say!
The consultations about York’s Free Speech policy will be on the following dates:
Friday, November 2, 2018 Glendon, Room A100, 1:00 to 3:00 pm
Tuesday, November 6, 2018 Keele, Founders College Assembly Hall, Room FC152, 10:00 to 11:30 am, and 2:30 to 4:00 pm
*Please join the YUGSA Executive for the consultation on Tuesday, November 6 at 2:30 pm. We will meet in the YUGSA office and walk to Founders College together.
