The YUGSA Equity committee is pleased to invite the York community to join us to celebrate the Black History Month in February.
The agenda of activities is as follows:
Friday, February 2, 2018: The launch of YUGSA Highlights 5 Website for Black History Month. The purpose of the Highlights 5 Website is to participate in the Black History Month by celebrating the contributions of black academics to fields studied at York University. The website proposed is entertaining and mildly educational. Even though the website is not a critical discussion of black history issues, it is meant to be a pleasant and relevant experience for website visitors, and a needed break from the multitude of depressing and devastating updates on the racial discourse from our American neighbours.
Wednesday, February 7, 2018: The screening of the movie “Hidden Figures” and a brief discussion of issues related to the equity-seeking group “women”.
Wednesday, February 14, 2018: The screening of the movie “Moonlight” and a brief discussion of issues related to the equity-seeking group “LGBTQ2”.
Wednesday, February 28, 2018: The screening of the documentary “13th” and a brief discussion of issues related to racial inequality and criminalization linked to the Jane and Finch Community.
Each movie will be screened on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. After each screening, we will have a brief discussion of the themes tackled in the movies as well as their relevance for members of our grad community.
Food and TTC tokens will be provided in each screening!
Spread out the word and come celebrate with us!
