Call for Mentors at BMGA Foundation
YUGSA has received a call from BMGA for mentors from graduate students studying at York University. Please find more information about their program below.
The BMGA Fellows Program is a social impact initiative designed to narrow the gender skills gap amongst recent university graduates. It is a six-month online transformative learning program designed to equip young women with the knowledge, access, and resources required to gain fundamental employability skills that strengthen their marketability for a successful career in the 21st Century. The program offers high-level professional development courses, mentorship from graduate students in top global universities, coaching from executives with international experience, exclusive conversations with renowned thought leaders, and life skills that are designed to prepare young women for the future of work.
Launched in 2020, with participants from Nigeria, we expanded our scope in 2021 to other African countries and had the first Pan-African cohort made up of individuals with keen interests in Business, Finance, Law, and STEM. 19% of the 2021 cohort are first-generation university graduates and 14% come from a marginalized ethnic group in Africa. So far, the impact of the program on the career trajectory of the young women is already evident.
Some of our Fellows, who are from over six (6) African countries, have already gotten admissions with scholarships into top graduate schools in Hungary, Italy, and the US i.e., Georgetown Law and the University of California, Berkeley. Others have received job offers from top law firms and tech companies (both domestic and international). For the 2022 cohort, the program would accommodate participants from Africa and Asia. The program has been expanded to Asian countries to foster collaboration, diverse learning, and global relationships.
Through the program, we aim to transform up to 10,000 female leaders directly and indirectly in the next five years. Because we apply the transformational domino concept by ensuring that we admit high potential women into the program, we are confident that BMGA Fellows will go on to transform other young women in their respective networks. This will ensure that more women are equipped with skills that enable them to be active contributors to a gender-equal world.
The peer-to-peer mentorship component of the program is designed to provide the participants with access to mentorship from graduate students in top global universities. This would give them a clearer perspective about their career journey and provide them with a better understanding of how to accomplish their career goals. To the best of our knowledge, [name of university/society] is an ideal place to find mentors who would help make this objective a reality. The 2022 cohort commences on Monday, 25 April 2022. This year, the peer-to-peer mentorship will run for three (3) months, from July - September 2022.
We would like to note that The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) is an official partner for the BMGA Fellows Program. This program is also supported by students, professors, and subject experts from the African Society of Cambridge University (ASCU), University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, University of Pretoria, EI Skills Group, Storywork International, Thunderbird School of Global Management, Gallup, Imperial College Business School, University College London, New York University, Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF), and Femme Minty, just to name a few. Previous cohorts had mentors from the African Society of Cambridge University (ASCU), Imperial College Business School, University College London, University of Oxford, among other top globally recognized universities.
